Queen of Reggae Soul, Etana, has officially released her highly-anticipated collaboration with the King of the Dancehall, Vybz Kartel , and the results are royal. The new single, a melodic Afrobeats waist-winer titled “Baby O,” is the second offering from Etana’s upcoming album Pamoja, due out this spring via her own Freemind Music label.
On “Baby O (ft. Vybz Kartel),” The Strong One, as Etana’s name translates to in Swahili, trades sentiments of devotion with the Worl’ Boss, as Kartel is infamously known, over a lightly snare-driven Afro-pop beat, produced by Freemind Music. The dynamic duo also released an animated lyric video so listeners could follow along as Etana’s flawless vocals cut through:
If I were your baby o Kartel
I would give you so much more baby I would give you everything darling You won’t ever need nothing
I’d give you all my love
Vybz Kartel responds with his raspy tone and signature wordplay:
So royal, you are my queen
Nah mek yuh leave me, a do di right ting Ital stew, she nuh waan turkey Good roots, yuh nuh frighten fi Hennessy
The overwhelmingly positive reaction to this unexpected collaboration was immediate, as the single got picked up by DJs around the world and added to rotation in major markets like NYC, London, and Miami, where Etana’s previous single “Proppa,” which features Ghanian international superstar Stonebwoy, had already been enjoying a healthy run
since its release at the end of February.
While Etana’s music and style have always been heavily influenced by African culture, it’s clear on this new project, her 8th studio album, that she has made an even more decisive effort to highlight that connection. The upcoming album Pamoja, which means “together” in Swahili, features guest vocalists from Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, and Ghana.
Adding to the international affair are notable guests like Italian rootsman Alborosie, Polynesian singer-songwriter Fiji, and Afro-German musical veteran Patrice. Of course, Etana’s native Jamaica is well-represented on the new set. Etana, who earned a 2018 Grammy Award nominee for Best Reggae Album with Reggae Forever, will not disappoint genre loyalists, as she recently revealed the news of an unreleased album track featuring none other than Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley.
Elaborating on the concept behind Pamoja, Etana offered, “this album is packed with very strong songs. I titled it ‘Pamoja’ because it’s time for us to come together.” She added, “‘Pamoja’ was created to evoke more love and unity; unity in our homes and unity amongst us as a people.”
An official video for “Baby O” is already in the final edit stages and expected to be released soon. Etana raised eyebrows recently with a new glamorous look she sported in the “Proppa (ft. Stonebwoy)” video, which is now enjoying steady rotation on BET Soul and BET Jams. The upcoming “Baby O” video is sure to give fans and media more to discuss.
Etana previously honed her skills as a background vocalist for the likes of reggae star Richie Spice, and has since enjoyed a string of Billboard Reggae chart-topping albums. Despite being incarcerated since 2011, Vybz Kartel has continued to release a prolific output of material while working towards his freedom.
ETANA DROPS “PROPPA (FT. STONEBWOY)”
JAMAICAN REGGAE-SOUL QUEEN COLLABORATES WITH GHANIAN AFROPOP STAR FOR FIRST SINGLE OFF OF HER UPCOMING ALBUM
Jamaican songstress and 2018 Grammy Award nominee Etana has recruited Ghanian Afropop sensation Stonebwoy for her brand new single “Proppa.” The single and lyric video dropped today via Etana’s record label, Freemind Music.
“Proppa (ft. Stonebwoy)” serves as the lead single for Etana’s upcoming eighth studio album, due for release this spring. The new tune, produced by Freemind Music, perfectly blends elements of dancehall and Afrobeats to create a sexy scorcher that is guaranteed to bring some much needed heat to the final months of winter.
Etana — Swahili for “The Strong One,” as she is affectionately know by her fans — demands on the track:
You want me to hand it ova
Then come at me, come at me Proppa
But cherish me just like Baby Oh Oh Oh
and I’ll call you Pappa
If you want to be my lova
So come at me, come at me Proppa
Stonebwoy, who won Best International Act at the 2015 BET Awards, is up to the task as he confidently responds:
I’m an African King in this place O
Jamaican girl you be my taste Oh
See I got a big place O
Only you gon fit to fill up the space Oh
Mek a give you lovin weh nobody gon fit to replace Oh
As the song was instantly added to DJ playlists around the globe, Etana and Stonebwoy prepare to release the official video for “Proppa” in the days ahead.
Excited about the early accolades, Etana said “working with IGAD Stonebwoy was cool, I love his energy! The song ‘Proppa’ is dubbed a banger by many already and it always feels good to drop music that the Strong Ones / Team Etana loves. I also feel the love from Bhim Nation on this one! Sending my love straight out to you all!”
Etana, who previously honed her skills as a background vocalist for the likes of reggae star Richie Spice, has since enjoyed a string of Billboard Reggae chart-topping albums. She has indicated that her upcoming full length project features several international collaborations with various reggae and Afrobeats artists. The debut single with Stonebwoy is a “Proppa” glimpse into what we can expect from Etana in the near future.
It is not often that well-known producer Comar ‘Frankie Music’ Campbell gets excited about a project, but he is obviously stoked about an upcoming EP that he is about to release with Davianah, the rebellious firebrand who is also the daughter of reggae star Tony Rebel.
“Davianah is a go-getter and she knows what she wants, so working with her was fun. Our creative side came to life with ease. she knows what she wants and she communicates that which makes the recording process good,” Comar ‘Frankie Music’ Campbell said.
“There are 6 tracks on the ‘Rebel Offspring’ album which we will be releasing. The first track, ‘Bad One’, will be released this month and the entire album in the first quarter of this year, if all goes as planned.”
The visuals for ‘Bad One’ will send a thinly-veiled message to the entire industry that Davianah – the quintessential rebel – is a force of nature that must be respected.
“Yes there will be an official video for ‘Bad One’. The concept aims to showcase that there are outcasts or black sheep within certain settings such as the family that don’t go with what is the norm or what is expected and that is sometimes not a bad thing but is seen as such by others that follow the norm. With Davianah, I have found that she defies all expectations, as she can tackle a variety of topics from different points of view,” Mr. Campbell said.
There have been some whispers in the street that Campbell will be working on tracks with international stars like Kranium on his upcoming album.
“There are many projects that Frankie Music is currently working on both internationally and locally and you’ll find out as soon as everything is finalized with all of them. In the meantime you can follow Frankie Music Studio ja to stay up to date,” he said.
Frankie Music has been in the production game for a minute and it’s one he clearly knows quite well. The reggae and dancehall producer has worked with a wide range of artistes such as Sizzla, Beenie Man, Konshens, Kim Nain, Delus, RR, Raging Fyah, Duane Stephenson, Shawn Antoine, Qraig (Voicemail) and, of course, Koffee. Koffee’s ‘Raggamuffin’, the second officially released song of her career, and the Vent Album are his biggest projects to date.
Last year, Campbell conceptualised the VPAL Music Fest, aka ‘FrankeFest’. VPAL Music, the VP Records subsidiary which allows independent artistes to access VP’s distribution channel, teamed up with Frankie Music, to host the first VPAL Music Fest, one of the online concerts with the mission to entertain, and keep live music alive in an era of social distancing caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
“That was a big success and we hope to tackle even more such major projects in the future,” he said.

Following on from ‘Original’ and his collaboration with UK’s Chip on ‘Reality’, Vershon gives us ‘Stick By Me’, which marks the third single release in the run up to his ‘Only One’ EP.

STREAM/PURCHASE: VERSHON – STICK BY ME
Continuing the sensuous side of Vershon that we saw in 2017 with his global smash ‘Inna Real Life’. ‘Stick By Me’ highlights Vershon’s versatility as an artist, while maintaining the emotionally charged lyricism we are used to from him, coupled by his melismatic vocals.
The music video is a modern-day love story filmed in Fort Lauderdale, downtown Miami where Vershon now resides. It’s a flag in the sand moment for Vershon creatively as he shoots ‘Stick By Me’ in his new hometown, marking the beginning of a new journey in his life.
Speaking on ‘Stick By Me’ and working with The Fanatix and Plan B Vershon says “Stick By Me’, is my third release from my new EP and was created whilst working with producer artist team ‘The FaNaTiX’. The FaNaTiX were in Montego Bay running a writing camp and on one of these occasions, Plan B was there working with them, they introduced us and encourage him to get involved in our session. Plan B joined us at the table with a bunch of laptops, a microphone set up and a room full of vibes and energy. It was days later, when my managers and FaNaTiX sent me links to his music, that I learnt who he is, his musical achievements, his work in the Film Industry as an actor and Director, and his charity work with young people, Plan B/Ben is cool and humble.”
Vershon has a unique style and lyrical choice and his name has quickly become synonymous with that of infectious music, his forthcoming six track EP masterfully balances his credibility with an international pop sensibility and bridges the gap between London and Jamaica assisted by a carefully curated line-up of guest features.
