“There is no Thanksgiving in Jamaica / Split the word, switch them around, take off the I-N-G… Give Thanks! Bon appétit…”
The quote above, shared from dub poet and spoken word/reggae artist Sheldon Shepherd‘s brand new single, titled “Give Thanks,” presents and reflects upon the idea of simplicity. Using common language and ordinary situations in a profound and poetic manner, the artist introduces us to a raggamuffin yet strangely elegant side of Jamaican culture distinctly his own.
Shepherd has spoken of his passion and love for dub poetry and honorarily uses the art form to assert and aid in the genre’s revolution and present day relevance. The language of the single is complemented by rich traditional reggae and dub sounds, produced by Toddla T, The1Devotion and Okiel McIntyre. Though in feel, the music reflects its dub antecedents, the contemporary relevance of the sound can be measured by its resonance with the story’s context and the added symphonic nuances that the sonic layers evoke from Shepherd’s meditation.
The music is distributed by Tuff Gong International and is available worldwide on all music platforms and streaming sites now.
