Rising artist, Kupid aka Q, has been performing since he was a young teenager. His musical influences growing up have led him to become a versatile and dynamic artist. His first big break came when he joined the group, Crossovah, a band that blurred the lines between Caribbean and mainstream music. After the group parted ways, Q began his solo career, where he has been praised for his ability to genre bend into hip hop, R&B, reggae, soca, and pop. His hit songs, “Hey Girl”, “Rant” and “Who Shot Ya” are prime examples of this artist’s universal style. Kupid aka Q has grown an impressive fan base and has been touted by Axs.com as one of the “10 emerging artists in Hip Hop and R&B music to watch”.
Q comes from an Antiguan and Guyanese background. He spent his childhood years in Antigua before moving to the U.S. As a child, his mother and father would listen to Caribbean music instilling the sounds of calypso, soca, reggae and dancehall into the young artist’s style. His older sisters also helped expand his musical taste by introducing him to hip-hop and R&B. As a teenager, Q was heavy into skateboard culture including punk music. His diverse upbringing led to having musical influences such as Red Rat, Lil Rick, Nas, Notorious B.I.G., Lil Wayne, Usher and Blink-182.
Dance has always been an important part of Kupid’s life. It was how he first got a taste of performing in front of a crowd and what eventually led to his start in a music career. A group of high school friends formed a dance group, The Fam, who choreographed their own routines and performed at festivals and events. From that, four of the members created another group consisting of R&B, hip-hop, soca and reggae artists and called themselves, Crossovah, to describe the movement of how they were bridging the gap between mainstream and Caribbean music.
Crossovah rose to fame from 2007 to 2012, performing across the states in Florida, New York, Texas, Virginia, Illinois, Georgia and internationally in Trinidad and Barbados. The group had the chance to open up for superstar performers such as T.I., Sean Kingston, Machel Montano, Red Rat, Bunji Garlin and Jeezy. Crossovah had an impressive showing at Carnival festivals every year, playing for massive crowds with their hits such as “Test di Foundation”, “Hey Ladies” and “Wuk Up Ya Waist”.
Kupid aka Q
After the group went their separate ways, Kupid aka Q ventured into his solo recording artist career as a hip hop and island pop artist. Q released his first single “Hey Girl” ft. Thomas Miller (2013), reminiscent of Will Smith’s “Summertime”, serving chill pool party, summer barbeque vibes. The track caught the attention of international reggae sensation, Gyptian, who invited the young artist to tour with him for multiple dates across the east coast and began building his fan base as a solo artist. Acting as a mentor to the emerging artist, producer Troyton Rami (Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Tinashe) collaborated with Q to produce his hit single, “Who Shot Ya” ft. Jus J (2016). The island pop vibe and hip-hop swag of the track had listeners excited for more music to be released.
Since dropping “Who Shot Ya”, Kupid aka Q has been performing at festivals and shows throughout the U.S. while also working on other tracks. Most recently, Q released “Rant” (2017), produced by Niko Star and shot music videos for both records. The hit songs have received generous airplay on Pandora, Spotify and indie radio stations. In addition, he continued his work with Troyton and created a remix for “Who Shot Ya” including a music video, soon to be released. You can find Kupid aka Q performing at shows throughout the U.S. including in and his hometown of Orlando, FL. The artist’s next endeavour will be releasing his EP, 7/7.
